Based on economic reality rather than economic theory, Realonomics offers a clear vision of how to transform our economy to become more dynamic, more stable, more equitable and less indebted; a place where people can thrive, not just survive.
"The rebels are at the gates of conventional economics — and rightly so. This book will help them burst through and free the people. A breath of fresh air."

The Realonomics Mission
Imagine a world where our economy was vastly more dynamic, with growth speeding along at 5% a year instead of near zero, as it is today. Where inflation stayed below 1%. Where boom-bust cycles were a thing of the past. Where the average house didn't cost 8x the average salary. Where innovators, entrepreneurs and SMEs could easily get finance to realise their ideas and grow their businesses. Where everyone benefits from the economy, rather than the top 1% capturing all the gains.
This world is possible, it is just a policy decision away.
Bizarrely, universities teach economics students to completely ignore the role of money, credit and banking in the economy. As a result, government policy also largely ignores the role of money, credit and banking. And so banks get away with parasitising the economy rather than supporting it, they can even crash the global economy, as they did in 2008, without being subjected to any reform at all.
By illuminating the vitally important role of money, credit and banking, Realonomics lights the path to a brighter economic future. We can emulate the Japanese economic miracle of 1945–1973, or the Chinese economic miracle underway since 1979, or we can continue the same policies that have failed us for the last 50 years. We have a choice, and it is time to choose differently.

The history of money, as well as its reality today, is more abstract than you might think — gold was never really used as money for day-to-day transactions. The earliest records in existence show that money was always credit.
When Ireland's banks shut their doors for 6 months in 1970, the system didn't collapse, it thrived. So exactly why do we allow banks the exorbitant privilege of creating our money supply out of thin air, and then renting it to us, at a handsome profit?
It is hard to imagine a world with a different system of money from the one we live in, and yet we all experienced such a world when we played Monopoly as children, where money is distributed to the players as a gift, not as loans. Using debt-money in Monopoly would be fatal to the game — it is not much different in real life.

"El-Ayoubi has written a fluent and excoriating critique of traditional economics. The book distinguishes itself by setting out an alternative model based around the central role of banking and credit in the modern economy."

"This is a provocative and well-written book… persuasively arguing that insufficient understanding of financial markets and their impact on the economy has damaged policy making. Its suggestions for how things can be improved are creative and controversial."
Ken Mayhew — Emeritus Professor of Education and Economic Performance, Oxford
"In an ideal world, books like Realonomics: How the Economy Really Works, And How We Can Fix It would be a mandatory accompaniment to the student's diet of standard economic theory."
